spring 1998: Volovske Vrchy

Due to early term (last March weekend), cold weather, diseases and other duties many hikers cancelled this trip, so there were four of us: Lubo, Marek, Peter, Vladya.

The meeting was quite complicated: Marek and Peter took a bus to Zilina, but were late to catch the train to Spisska Nova Ves and came to the starting point (Hnilec) by other trains/buses/walking on rails and ice. Vladya's bus was completely full, so he took even later one, climbed up and waited on the other two Czechs. Together they followed a snowy path through Volovec [1284] and Skalisko to the saddleback Krive, the next morning meeting point with Lubo. They tried to catch him at the bus stop at Paca village, but were unsuccesful: Lubo walked directly from Roznava below the Krive.

On the Saturday morning there was some catching and hiding in the hills about Paca, but at one o'clock all of us had met together and continued through the Pipitka [1225] range to Osadnik. From there down through juniper slopes to the Lucka village, tea and beer in a pub. We had found a shelter in a beautiful stone tower of a ruined castle by the cemetary; it was locked, but there was a large window to climb into and not much garbage inside.

The Sunday morning was shiny, the summer time (read: DST) has begun. By the creek to the Zadiel valley and up to the karst plateau. A tropic weather, like the last year in another part of Slovak Karst. Down to the Turnian castle (a nice ruin) and to Turna, from there by bus/hiking/train home.
