spring 1997: Slovak Karst

Beginning of the April, 5 vejletniks. The Czechs arrived by train to Poprad and then took a bus to Roznava, where waited Lubo. The weather seemed to be cold in Prague and Poprad, but the subtropic Roznava was sunny and warm.

After the rich breakfeast in front of shop we took a bus to Rakovnica, a village under Plesivecka plateau. Climbed up the steep slope and got on the plateau - a plain with juniper hedges, karst depressions and occasional snow patches. A rest at noon: drinking original Jack Daniels, brought by Peter from Knoxville, being disturbed with some people cutting trees and drawing them away by jeep. We crossed the plateau and climbed down on its southeast side to Slavec, took a water and went up through a cutting to Silicka plateau. We tried to find a hut marked on the map, but then slept at the edge of the wood.

Next day we tried to find where we are - we saw some transmitter tower near us, but there were many of them on the map. At last we found the right one and took straight road through woods and hills to the area of abysses and caves. We had found four abysses there (Great and Little Oak Abyss, Great and Little Iron Abyss) and the Silicka Cave. From there to Silica, visit of a pub, talk with a drunken czechophile ("I love you, boys, I love Prague and I love your president Havel!"), and a lunch at cemetary wall. Then back to the plateau, by the road some fire-brigade work (stopping the fire in the junipers, made by some stupid villager). At the evening we had found quite acceptable place and made a tea there, but Lubo and Vladya discovered a better place a little way longer, so moved there.

In the Monday morning way down the oak forest to Krasnohorske Podhradie, search for a cave. Vladya had found it and we crawled inside: the beginning was a comfortable artificial tunnel, then the mud and water came (with some pieces of wood lying over the underground river). The water seemed to be over the normal state, so before the underground lake we had turned back and returned to the village. There we took a bus just in time and came to Roznava, from there by buses (Lubo and Peter to B.Bystrica, the other to Poprad).
